Project Description

What does it mean to know someone? Intuitively, knowing someone involves not just basic declarative knowledge (e.g., Priya knows that Theresa is an only child), but also a broader understanding of someone’s patterns of behaviour and, to some extent, their inner states. Put differently, for Priya to feel like she knows Theresa, she needs to have a general predictive model of how Theresa is likely to behave in different contexts. In this project, we will explore the subjective process of getting to know someone, including how people’s intersecting identities affect this process (e.g., does Priya expect that she will never understand or be understood by Tim?). As part of the SROP project, you will work with a graduate student mentor in the lab to design and conduct a project to better understand these processes. In doing so, you will gain experience collecting and managing qualitative and quantitative data.

Does this project require the SROP Student to be in-person or remote? Either one

Mentorship Statement

The SKIP Lab values collaboration and community, so in addition to meeting with the PI and the graduate student mentor, you will also be invited to attend lab meetings to meet the other students in the lab. Our goal is to work together to develop and implement your project, and by the end of the program, you will be familiar with the literature in this area and you will have gained experience with several parts of the research process.
