A study of negative reinforcement

Project Description

Dr. Leri and his team, sponsored by NSERC, investigate how reinforcing stimuli shape behavior by stabilizing memories formed during experiences. Their research focuses on the post-training effects of drugs of abuse in rats, later extending to palatable foods and other reinforcers. The studies revealed conditions where post-training treatments enhance or impair learning and yielded other surprising findings._x000D_

In fact, exposure to reinforcers not only strengthens memories but also amplifies the salience of environmental stimuli present during reinforcement. This discovery aligns with the team’s expertise in the neurobiology of conditioned reinforcers. They demonstrated that environmental cues associated with both positive (e.g., nicotine) and negative (e.g., opioid withdrawal) reinforcers significantly impact memory consolidation. These effects likely involve shared actions on the brain’s monoamine and stress-response systems, highlighting the interconnected nature of reinforcement and memory._x000D_

This summer research opportunity will specifically focus on the memory effects of negative reinforcers.

Mentorship Statement

As a mentor, I prioritize creating a supportive, inclusive, and enriching environment where students can thrive academically, professionally, and personally. My approach focuses on fostering intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, and resilience, while ensuring mentees feel empowered to explore their interests and contribute meaningfully to the research objectives of the laboratory._x000D_
